The story behind the company
Henry James, Rotterdam
Today in the story behind the
company: Sonia van den Berg,
Owner of PhenomeNail. Sonia
was interviewed by Peter Wok.
Peter: “Please introduce yourself.”
Sonia: “My name is Sonia van
den Berg, am 46 years old, have
been working in nail styling since I was 18.” She continues:
“Furthermore, I am happily
married to John and together
we have two children aged 14
and 16.”
Peter: “When did you start working for yourself?”
Sonia: “Officially I have been
self-employed since I was 30,
but before I started working at
my 18th birthday at Salon Herb
– Nails and Eyelashes, I was already taking care of the nails of
many family members, friends
and acquaintances.
In this way I
built up my own customer base,
but it was always good that they
were mostly acquaintances. I
wasn’t very good back then, the
quality of the materials didn´t
quite hit the standards of my
materials now.”
Peter: “So how did you eventually come to being self-employed?”
Sonia: “That was, because Maria, the owner of Salon Herb,
wanted to quit and had asked all
the colleagues who were interested in taking over the business.
Then I took over the salon and
got into this extraordinary adventure.”
Peter: “But your salon hasn’t
been called Salon Kruid – nails
and eyelashes for a while now?”
Sonia: “No that’s right indeed.
That name change is actually
directly related to the changes,
which we had to go through in
our salon. We said goodbye to
eyelash care due to lack of space. The profit was simply too
low, and with the removal of
two eyelash treatment chairs,
we were able to add four nail
treatment tables that fit nicely
into the interior.
Not long after, it turned out that
we were forced to move, but fortunately we were able to move
into this beautiful old building,
where we now do our work under the name PhenomeNail,
with great pleasure!”
Peter: “Is there anything else
you would like to say to other
entrepreneurs or readers of this
newspaper?”
“I wasn’t very good back then, the quality of the materials
didn´t quite hit the standards of my materials now..”
Sonia: “I really like this item! I
think it is really important that
local entrepreneurs have the opportunity to let their voices be
heard and to make themselves
known here in the region. Keep
up the good work!”

After many years, there is finally some movement in the case
of Denzel Osas. An anonymous tip recently came in about the
well-known case. Denzel Osas was left for dead in the Port of
Rotterdam in 2001. The National Criminal Investigation Department is looking for
external help with this case. Do you have a good analytical mind
and do you want to close this case for good?

Winter sports?
Why go all the way to Austria?
Jan Benjamin, NRC
Rotterdam – ‘“We don’t need to go to the Tyrol at all”, is something we hear in a beautiful film that Bas Romeijn placed on his website today. And indeed, 81 years ago, in January 1940, Rotterdam citizens were able to go on winter sports right in the middle of their own city!
An unknown amateur filmmaker went in that very harsh winter with his wife to the – back then almost undeveloped – Land van Hoboken near the center of Rotterdam. The frost and snow had made the area an attractive terrain for winter sports.
It was a nice distraction in the time of the threat of war and mobilization, which the filmmaker captured in stunning images. We see, among other things, the Westersingel, ice skating and ice hockey in the park, cars towing skiers and children with sleds.
In the background you can see Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the former Unilever building and the modern villas of Huize Sonneveld and the Chabot Museum.
It looks idyllic, especially when you consider what happened just a few months later. In
May 1940, the Land van Hoboken was crowded again, then with people who had fled the bombing.

Shopping is changing. We shop more often online.
And we just have different needs than before. It’s quite a
task for shopping streets to remain fun. We took a look at
Boulevard-Zuid in Rotterdam. Because if it works there, it
will work everywhere in the city!
The Beijerlandselaan and the Groene Hilledijk together
form a shopping street that is no less than 1.2 kilometers
long; the Boulevard-Zuid, also simply called ‘the Lane’
or ‘de Laan’ in Dutch. In the golden days, people came to
shop here from as far away as the Hoeksche Waard, and
Feyenoord was honored here rather than on the Coolsingel
on the other side of the river. Here you could find stores
that you couldn’t find anywhere else in Rotterdam.
But that was all a long time ago. For decades steering
committees, officials and managers have been trying to
breathe new life into the street with revitalization plans.
The Hand in Hand Alliance, part of the National Programme for Rotterdam -Zuid (NPRZ) and a promising initiative
for several reasons, has been in existence for a year and a
half now. Will it work this time?
The first signs are there. On the stretch of Green Hilledijk on the Strevelsweg side a large number of canopies have
been removed. And immediately the sidewalk is wider and
the street lighter. Oh, and you can also see the advantage of
years of neglect: when the canopies are removed, beautiful
facades appear.
The Beijerlandselaan, the shopping street of RotterdamZuid! Without awnings, the sidewalk will become a lot
wider and lighter.
We walk around with Ron van Gelder. It is early December and we had no idea that a few weeks later almost all
the stores would be closed. There is activity everywhere, we
are enthusiastically introduced to entrepreneurs. We even
take a look in a couple of restaurants, which are already
closed at that time, but whose owners still come and have a
look around every day. To catch up with Ron, for example.
Because Ron knows everyone on the Lane. And everyone
knows Ron.
Ron is also an old friend of ours. A few years ago De Havenloods described in a series of stories the change that the
West-Kruiskade underwent. Van Gelder was responsible
(together with many others) for transforming the street in
the Old West from a dark and notorious ‘garbage pit’ into
one of the most lively shopping streets in the Netherlands.
